External evacuation

Anyone who is not covered by the mandatory social protection regime, who is ill, and whose means of medical treatment in the country are proven to be exhausted.

External Evacuation

The external evacuation process begins after an appointment where the attending physician or specialist proves the need for the patient to go abroad for treatment and through a reasoned report, sends the patient to the Health Board.

The opinion of the patient's evacuation for treatment abroad is the responsibility of the Board of Health, and the approval of this decision is from the Ministry of Health.

The National Center for Social Benefits, through the External Evacuation Assistance Offices (GAEE) in Barlavento and Sotavento, is the entity responsible for preparing the entire logistical process for the external evacuation of people who are not part of the mandatory social protection regime.

Benefits attributed to the evacuated patient

  • Daily allowance for the patient in the amount of 12.47 Euros and for the companions in the amount of 6.24 Euros, paid monthly;
  • Transport allowance (Social pass);
  • Reimbursement of expenses with medicines and compensation devices, according to the Table practiced by ADSE in Portugal;
  • When applicable, a maximum grant of 850 euros to pay for funeral expenses.
